Bagasse bezeichnet die faserige Masse, die bei der Zuckergewinnung aus Zuckerrohr und Zuckerrüben übrigbleibt. Sie entsteht, wenn der Zuckersaft, der anschließend zu Kristallzucker weiterverarbeitet wird, aus dem Zuckerrohr herausgepresst wird. Bei der Produktion einer Tonne Zucker entsteht so eine Drittel Tonne Bagasse. Es handelt sich hier also um ein Nebenprodukt der Zuckerfabrikation mit vielseitigen Weiterverwendungsmöglichkeiten: Zum einen wird die Bagasse zurück auf die Zuckerrohrfelder gebracht, um dort als natürlicher Dünger dem Boden wichtige Nährstoffe zurück zu geben. Zum anderen wird Bagasse in der Zuckerproduktion als fester Brennstoff genutzt, um Energie zu erzeugen. Eine noch relativ neue Verwendungsmöglichkeit ist die Herstellung von Verpackungen und Einweggeschirr.
